
Sao Paulo is the world’s second largest city with a population of 18 million inhabitants. It is the capital of the state with the same name. It is the main industrial, commercial, financial and cultural center of Latin America. It is also the main center for IP activities in Brazil.
Greater Sao Paulo comprises 39 municipalities, with significant presence of Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, German and Arab descendants. Brazil has the largest population of Japanese descent outside of Japan, of which 72% have settled in Sao Paulo. About 5 million people of Italian descent also live here.
Sao Paulo state has a population of 40 million people (2005), which represents 21.5% of the country’s total. Its share in the Brazilian banking system amounts to 46% of all of deposits and 43% of the credit operations.
